On a house with capacity to spare this is a straightforward half-day job. On a house without it, it becomes a conversation about the service, and the difference between those two is a load calculation rather than a guess.
What sets the price
Two things move the number and neither is the charger. The first is whether the service can carry a continuous 40 or 48 amp load on top of everything else. The second is how far the charger sits from the panel, because that run is most of the labour, which a wall connector install shows in detail.
Where both are favourable, expect $900 to $1,800 all in, with the wider market sitting at $749 to $2,500. Hardware is $400 to $900 of that and labour $200 to $700, over two to six hours.
Where the service cannot carry it, add $800 to $3,500 for the capacity work, and that is when the honest conversation starts. An electrical panel upgrade is one answer, a subpanel another where the box is merely full, and load management is often a third that costs nothing at all.

The option not offered
A charger with load management watches the rest of the house and steps back when the service is busy. Overnight, when almost nothing else is running, it charges at full rate.
That matters because a plain load calculation can say no while a managed install says yes, and the difference is thousands of dollars. Any quote that jumps straight to a service upgrade without mentioning it is worth a second opinion, which is the point of the EV charging overview.
Hardwired against plug-in is the other decision. Hardwiring is required above a certain rating and is generally the tidier answer outdoors; a plug-in unit is easier to take with you.
Where the outlet is the route chosen, outlet and switch installation covers what a dedicated high-amperage receptacle needs. Whichever way it goes, this is permitted work, and permits and certificates sets out what that produces and who ends up holding it.
