An outlet should be at room temperature. Warmth, discolouration, a plug that no longer grips, or any smell of burning means a connection is failing, and a failing connection generates heat that makes it fail faster.
What the heat means
Electricity passing through a tight connection produces almost no heat. Through a loose one it produces a great deal, and that heat oxidises the metal, which raises the resistance, which produces more heat. The process accelerates rather than settling down, which is why thermal imaging finds these before anyone smells them.
That is why a warm outlet is not something to keep an eye on. It is a fault already in progress, and the visible signs, discolouration around the slots or a plug that has stopped gripping, mean it has been going on for a while. Outlet and switch repair covers what the fix involves once the circuit is safe.
Backstabbed devices are one of the common causes: the connection is a small spring rather than a screw, and it relaxes over years. Aluminum branch wiring is another, because it expands and contracts more than copper and works connections loose unless the devices are rated for it, which is what aluminum wiring replacement addresses.
How it runs
Circuit isolated before anything is opened. If you have already done that, say so when you ring.
The hot device is often not the failing one. We work the circuit rather than replacing what is visible.
Fixed, then the other terminations on the same circuit checked, because loose connections rarely come alone.
Loaded and rechecked for heat rather than just powered back up.
Before we arrive
Unplug whatever is in it, and switch off the breaker for that circuit if you can identify it safely. Removing the load stops the heating immediately, and it is the single most useful thing you can do while waiting.
If the smell is present but you cannot find the source, treat that as more urgent rather than less. A smell without a visible outlet means the failing connection is inside a wall, a ceiling box or the panel itself, and the panel is the first place we look. A 24/7 electrician attends this at any hour.
Once it is safe, the question becomes whether it is one device or a pattern. Where several connections on a circuit are found loose, an electrical safety inspection across the rest of the house is the sensible follow-up rather than waiting for the next one.

Common questions
Talked us through isolating it on the phone before setting off. Sensible and calm.
No visible source. They found it at the panel, which we would never have looked at.
Checked every other outlet on the circuit and found two more starting to go.
Came out at eleven at night and made it safe rather than telling us to wait.

Next step
Unplug it, isolate the circuit if you safely can, and ring rather than booking online.
