Hanging a fixture is quick. Making sure the thing behind it can carry the weight is the actual job, and it is the part nobody sees. A box rated for a lamp is not rated for a chandelier, and the difference only announces itself later.
Behind the ceiling
Ceiling boxes carry a weight rating, and a standard one is not built for a heavy multi-arm fitting. Where the new fixture is heavier than what came down, the box is replaced with a rated one fixed to a brace between the joists.
Height changes the work as much as weight. A fitting over a stairwell or a two-story entry needs access equipment and a second pair of hands, and it takes two to four hours rather than one. Pricing depends on reach at least as much as on the fixture. A fan in the same position is a different requirement again, which ceiling fan installation sets out.
The wiring above is worth a look while the box is open. Old fixture whips, connections made without a box and a ground that was never continuous are all common in houses old enough to be redecorating. Where that turns up, an electrical safety inspection is a cheaper next step than finding it circuit by circuit, and grounding and bonding covers why the missing ground matters.
How it runs
What the fixture weighs against what the existing box is rated to carry. Where they do not match, the box is replaced rather than the fixture reconsidered.
While the box is open we check the whip, the connections and the ground. Most of what we find is quick; all of it is cheaper found now.
Fitting landed, levelled properly, switch and any dimmer tested through the whole range rather than just on and off.
A swap usually is not permitted work. A new position with a new circuit is, and we file it.
What it costs
Replacing a fixture where a box already exists is straightforward: $100 to $350 in labour for a chandelier, and $100 to $650 all in for most fittings.
Where the fixture is going is worth thinking about alongside what else lights the room. A single good fitting over a table often outperforms adding more pot lights, and where the fitting is a fan rather than a lamp, ceiling fan installation has a different box requirement again.
If the existing fitting stopped working rather than stopped suiting you, do not assume it needs replacing. Light fixture repair often finds a switch or a connection instead.

Common questions
Replaced the box with a braced one without being asked. The old one was never rated for it.
Brought the right access equipment. Two hours, no mess, dead level.
Found an ungrounded connection above the box and showed it to us before reconnecting.
Asked for the mounting details in advance so nothing was missing on the day.

Send us the fixture weight and the mounting detail. We arrive with the right box rather than a reason to come back.
