A dead outlet is rarely a dead outlet. More often it is a connection failing somewhere upstream, and the device you are looking at is simply the first place the symptom appeared.
Dead outlets
Outlets on a circuit are connected in sequence, so a connection that fails at one device takes out everything after it. The dead outlet you noticed is often perfectly sound, and the failure is at the last working one before it.
The other common cause is protection that has done its job silently. A ground fault device protects everything downstream of it, so one tripped device in a bathroom can kill outlets in a garage with no obvious link between them. Finding it is often the whole job, and tripping breaker diagnosis covers the case where a breaker rather than a device is involved.
Replacing the visible device without tracing is how the same complaint returns within two weeks. It also misses the real risk, because a connection that failed open could as easily have failed hot, which is what a hot outlet is. Where several devices are involved, an electrical safety inspection is the sensible follow-up.

Terminated on screws rather than back-stab springs, which is what fails in the first place.
Other devices on the same circuit are checked while we are there, because loose connections rarely come alone.
Loose, sparking and worn
Contacts inside a device lose tension over years, and once a plug falls out under its own weight the connection is intermittent. Intermittent means arcing, and arcing means heat, so a loose outlet is a small fault heading somewhere worse rather than a cosmetic annoyance.
While the device is out, it is worth matching it to the room rather than replacing like for like. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, garages and outdoors want ground fault protection; living areas want arc fault. Outlet and switch installation sets out which goes where.
Switches fail differently. A switch that has to be held, or that works at one angle, has worn contacts and gets replaced rather than adjusted.
