Layout first

Pot light installation: spacing and beam angle beat more lights

The usual instinct when a room feels dim is to add lights. Usually the fix is moving them. Fittings placed too close to the walls wash the plaster and leave the middle flat; placed too far apart they pool.

Beam angle is the part people are never shown. A narrow beam over a worktop is deliberate and useful; the same fitting in a bedroom is a spotlight in your eyes. We pick the angle per room rather than fitting one product everywhere, which is also why a light fixture over a table often does more than three more downlights.

Dimming is where a good install goes wrong at the last step. Not every driver works with every dimmer, and the symptom is flicker or a buzz at low output.

Into a finished ceiling, expect $125 to $300 a light. Where the ceiling is still open during a renovation, the same fitting is $65 to $175. Pricing depends on what is above the plasterboard far more than on which downlight you chose.

Insulation, joist direction and whether there is attic space are what set the number. A room under an accessible attic is quick. A middle-floor ceiling with a finished room above means fishing every run, and that is where the hours go. If the work is part of a wider job, renovation and basement wiring is the cheaper time to do it.

Capacity is worth one sentence. Downlights draw very little now, so a dozen of them rarely troubles a circuit, but they are usually added to a lighting circuit that is already carrying the rest of the floor. Where the panel is full anyway, a subpanel or a panel upgrade may already be on your list for other reasons.
