If you are unsure whether your job needs one, ask before you compare quotes, because a quote that excludes the permit will always look cheaper than one that includes it.
A load calculation. A full panel and an undersized service are different problems with very different prices, and only the calculation tells them apart. Bring a photograph of the panel label to the first call. It gives us the service rating and the panel brand, which is most of the answer before anyone visits.
Yes, and rough-in is usually booked against the drywall date. Inspection has to happen before the walls close, so that date drives the sequence. Tell us the drywall date as early as you have one. Rough-in and the inspection both have to land before that, and moving it later costs more than booking it early.
Knob and tube and aluminum branch wiring cannot safely be extended. That does not always mean a full rewire, but it does mean the new work is separated from the old. Where the old wiring stays, the new work is kept separate from it and labelled, so the next electrician can see immediately what is original and what is not.
