Everything that matters about a panel is behind the cover. Terminations, breaker condition, the state of the bus and how much heat anything is making are all invisible from the front, and all four decide whether you are repairing or replacing.
What we look at
Every termination gets checked for tightness, because a loose one heats under load and gets worse rather than staying the same. That single check accounts for most of what a panel inspection finds and most of what it prevents.
Breakers are assessed for condition and age. Thermal elements weaken over years of tripping until a breaker operates below its rating, which shows up as nuisance tripping that people wrongly blame on their appliances. Tripping breaker diagnosis is where that usually starts.
The bus bar is the finding that changes the answer. Pitting where a breaker has been arcing means a replacement breaker will arc against the same damage, and at that point breaker panel repair stops being sensible and a panel upgrade is the honest quote.
How it runs
Safely de-energised where required and the cover removed. Nothing useful is decided with it on.
Tightness, condition and any sign of heat. This is where most findings come from and where most failures start.

What you get
Findings are photographed rather than described, because a homeowner should be able to see the pitting or the discolouration rather than take our word for it. Those photographs are also what makes a second opinion possible.
Where heat is suspected but nothing is visible, thermal imaging is added to the visit and finds connections that are already warm under load. Where the concern is broader than the panel, an electrical safety inspection covers the whole installation for $180 to $320 on most homes.
If the panel is full and the real question is capacity rather than condition, a subpanel may answer it for a great deal less than a service upgrade.
