Service upgrades

Do you actually need it
These are two different problems and they have two different prices. A full panel means every breaker slot is used. A service that is genuinely undersized means the total load your home draws is close to what the incoming conductors and main breaker can carry. The first is often solved with a subpanel installation for a fraction of the cost.
The way to tell them apart is a load calculation, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion. We total the fixed loads, apply the demand factors the code sets out, and compare the result against your existing service.
A 100A service in a house with gas heat, gas water heating and no electric cooling usually has more headroom than the homeowner expects. The same 100A service in an all-electric house that has just added a level 2 charger often does not.
Where the panel itself is the problem rather than the service, a panel and breaker inspection will say so, and you can stop there.
How it runs
We total your actual loads against the code demand factors and look at how the service enters the building. This is where we find out whether you need the upgrade at all, and what the mast and meter will add if you do.
You get the panel, meter, labour and permit as separate lines, and the utility disconnect fee named rather than absorbed. The permit is filed before anything starts.
Power is off for most of a working day. The old panel comes out, the new panel and service entrance go in, and every circuit is landed and labelled properly rather than left to the next electrician to work out.
The inspection is booked by us, and you get the certificate for your records and your insurer. Grounding and bonding are brought to current code as part of the job, not as an extra.
What the number is made of
A standard overhead 100A to 200A service upgrade runs $1,800 to $5,500, and most homes land between $2,800 and $4,200.
We show those as their own lines rather than one figure, because that is the only way you can compare our quote against anyone else.
If a quote you have been given is a single number, ask which of the four it includes, and ask specifically whether the permit and inspection are inside it or on top. The same question applies to a whole home rewiring quote, where the spread between contractors is even wider.
What moves the price most is rarely the panel. It is the service entrance, whether the mast needs replacing, and whether the meter can stay put. A site visit settles all three. Where your existing service is fine we say so, and a safety inspection is the cheaper work worth doing instead.
