Water changes the rules. A hot tub needs a dedicated circuit, ground fault protection, a disconnect within reach but not too close, and bonding of the metal around it. All four are requirements rather than preferences.
What is required
A dedicated circuit is first: these draw heavily and continuously, so sharing is not on the table, and a subpanel is often where it lands. Ground fault protection is second, and for a spa it protects the whole circuit rather than a single outlet.
Fourth is bonding, and it is the one most often skipped because it is invisible. An electrical safety inspection is where an existing tub gets checked against all four.
Metal parts around the tub get tied together so they cannot sit at different voltages, which is the same principle covered in grounding and bonding and matters more here than anywhere else in a house.
None of that is discretionary, and any quote that omits the disconnect or the bonding is cheaper because it is doing less. That is worth asking about directly rather than assuming the numbers are comparable.
How it runs
Amperage, voltage and whether it is 40 or 60 amps. The manual settles this and it changes everything downstream.
Whether the service carries it, and whether the panel has a position. Two different questions with two different prices.
Circuit run, disconnect placed at the required distance, and the metal around the tub bonded properly.
Ground fault protection tested rather than assumed, then inspected with the certificate to you.
What it costs
A basic 40 amp run to a tub near the panel comes in at $1,000 to $1,800. The usual professional installation sits at $1,900 to $4,200.
The panel question is the same one that governs everything else: a full panel is not an undersized service. A subpanel at $400 to $1,800 often answers it, and a service upgrade is only needed where the calculation says the supply genuinely cannot carry it.
Trenching is the other variable, and if anything else is going in the ground it is worth combining. Outdoor and landscape lighting or a level 2 charger run in the same trench costs a fraction of a second visit.
